HP Laserjet 1012 printing echo and smudges?

There are smudges almost exactly 2'; apart about 1/3 page wide all the way down the page. Also an echo of printed sentences starts about 1/3 of the way down the page and is really bad at the bottom of the page. The printer hasn't been used in several months, and is only used for personal use. Thanks!HP Laserjet 1012 printing echo and smudges?
You have toner on one of the ';rolling'; devices that moves the paper through the printer. One spot on there will cause the smudge all the way down the paper. If you can, just get that Canned Air, open the Printer up and try to remove the excess toner that builds up over time and then use the canned air to remove the rest of the debris.HP Laserjet 1012 printing echo and smudges?
Either the toner cartridge or fuser needs swapped.

Check http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/Tec鈥?/a> for a troubleshooting guide to image defaects on that model

Alsomight be worth simply printing 50 pages with aolmost nothing on it as machine been idle a while, also shake toner cart b4 doing this. SOMETIMES can clear out ';residue';
Replace the cartridge...
2 inches apart shouldn't be the fuser, that should be a bigger spacing. Most likely the toner but I'm not familiar with that model. The distance will be equal to the circumference of the roller at fault. Now echo or ghosting is usually the fuser. If you have an issue with the DC controller or high voltage power supply that could cause the toner to not all be pulled from the imaging drum and residue will be left to cause the ghost effect. I would start with toner as it's the cheapest and see what happens.
